World Building Proposal
Hey Guys!Friday the 11th of March
Today is the day of Assessment Due at 9pm
All the labs are taken, so I'm in the back up room, where there is no Photoshop on these computers. So I'll be writing up pages here and copy and paste into the photoshop this afternoon.
Identify at least 2 relevant existing and emerging practices of established worlds that have inspired this project. Evaluate what techniques, tools, and software they used to achieve their concepts.
World:
Real World China:
As I've based this world in our realm, I looked into the culture of China. Also understanding what is the difference between China and Japan, as to me, they seem very similar and want the audience to understand this is China, not Japan.
Some facts I found:
What I first understood was that China is a culture that is very much reliably on the traditional ways. Isn't pop cultured or modernised cities.
China is an internal collective culture, which means, they are more family-cantered. Unlike Japan, they are more about social standards.
Environmental Practises, China is one of the largest countries that aren't environmental friendly. This shows in the bad air pollutions, water and soil contamination.
The government is run by Communist Party, by this some of China isn't religionist, even atheism. However, some of China worship Buddhism religion.
Other than the main religion, the Zodiacs in the Chinese culture are usually believed because of the folklore and stories. These then developed into different personality traits, so people believed that the year you were born in, the year of the animal is your personality trait. There was an ancient religion and china astrology, that believe heavy in the zodiacs, called Taoism. Which believes they can predict your future with these animals.
Alita: Battle Angel and Arcane:
Alita and Arcane are heavily focused on the hierarchy system, those who are in low class (and mid class) wish to be in the higher class/in the location of the higher class.
Would like to have that hierarchy dream within this world. But I would like it to be that the floating sky city, Jade City, to be not a safe haven. It to be something that the low and mid classes to be mislead into safe security when they are 'chosen' to go up to Jade city.
Even though China currently is run by a Communist Party, which means everyone to treated equally, I think that this world the citizens believe that is the case, but actually it is not. That the citizens that live not on the floating city, Jade City, believes that they all live in a somewhat equal society and in traditional ways. In the Jade city, they live a different way, possible in a far more future technology way. Also that the higher class/government believe that those who live in a lower class are fair play for experimentation.
So propaganda is going to play a huge factor within this world.
Concept Art:
Persona 5:
Persona 5 concept art book is filled with mostly the characters and items used within the video game. These works are more design development, how they came to be and final designs. But what I like in particular is the line art, they use what looks like indian ink or something similar to do these artworks. This gives very much a Chinese vibe, comparing to their traditional artworks.
There is two types of line art thickness they use as well. First thick ink strokes, to give first ideas onto the page. Then, think clean lines to show a final design of characters and some items. They do use colour in these designs, but throughout the game and style they only use one or two colour at a time. But mostly throughout the pages, just very limited amount.
With the layout, they show sometimes two versions of the same thing, one line art and then tone. What I mean by tone is, basic colour or grey shading. Example is this: (Shows examples)
I believe the reasons why they do this is to give a strong impact to their work, focusing on the simplicity, yet when people see it understand what they are looking at.
Line of action, silhouettes, tones/lines conflicting with others. Colour isn't fully needed to understand what character you are looking at. Yes it helps but it seems in their concept book, it isn't their main focused.
What I would use this inspiration for in this project:
- Culture, Designing the classes clothing, any weapons or items certain classes use.
- Architecture, give form to some landmarks (i.e. floating city, great wall, some buildings in town) this would be used to show development, some tools and items.
- Nature, I believe, maybe the zodiac spirits (even though I might use a different colour than black ink as they don't have a physical body) and the mountain shapes.
Assassin Creed Valhalla:
Assassin Creed Valhalla use paint strokes to make a realistic artworks. These picture perfect works shows the natural light and textures of the world. They use these techniques for character and landscape drawings. But I believe the landscape drawings are what I would be aiming for this project.
What I would use this inspiration for this project:
- Nature and Architecture, I believe I might just be using this inspiration for final designs/presentation of the world, as it give realistic to the world.
As this would be 3D animated, I feel the line art of Persona 5 would make the final design very anime like and would be somewhat hard to do.
(Shows examples of the work)
Lv Hui Chen:
Found Lv Hui Chen on a website, Artstation, and I just love how the artworks are presented and explained.
They show in detail their works, the line art, the tones/shading, the final colour, and the detail pieces. I think I like this artwork design and display more than Assassin Creed Valhalla.
Here is some examples of their works:

Thumbnails:
For this board I need to have the following:
- Nature
- Landscapes,
- Environment
- Geology
- Water
- Climate
- Seasons in the World
- Architecture
- Man-Made Structures, buildings, statues, inventions, tools.
- Culture
- Politics
- Fashion
- Entertainment
- Religion
- Social Hierarchy
- Timeline and History
- Additional Elements:
- Digital video of seamless loop of a panning shot - Pan view from Sky, top Jade City, to mid and lower class town, to the water/flood, to depths of water (black), looping back to the sky.
- Sculptural Elements - Defiantly Paper Lanterns. Maybe, 'Air' cigarette, models of limb replacements, or Zodiac Spirits.
- Relevant Audio - traditional Chinese songs with electronic twist.
I would like to have on this board is that first glance you have a story, but would you lift up some pieces of paper that are on the board, you have another story. On this thumbnail I have circled parts of the board that would be loose paper, where the people viewing it can lift up and view what is the other side of the story.
Would like to have the Zodiacs Animals located throughout the board, as they are the protectors of the citizens.
