Notes for Me to take reference photos:
From:
https://reference.pictures/10-ways-to-use-reference-to-make-better-art/
1. Direct Studying of Reference
With taking photos, try and make it a fun time so its less daunting and boring!
Try and set up the image to be as close to desired illustrations for less editing process. Ie, correct lighting, posture, perspective, etc.
When comparing the images, do a side by side to see which of the images are best. This is also good for when drawing the references.
2. Targeting Fundamentals
Focus on a few things when learning to use reference images, I'll list below what things I'll be focusing and not be focusing.
Line of ActionWill be focusing:
Balance of character
Foreshortening
Exaggeration (but not cartoony)
Main Focus of, Emotion and Communication within posture
Not be focusing/working on:
Silhouettes, I have the basis of understanding a silhouette when posing character.
Colour of Character, Not fully important for this project.
Prospective of Character, as I have some knowledge to put into prospective, its just learning to foreshorten the anatomy is what I would like to understand.
3. Combining References
Even though I'll be getting my own photo references, it is very rare to get the prefect photo reference for an illustration. I will need to learn how to combine images from other photographs. Ie, in one photograph I like the torso, but don't like how to legs are placed, but in another photo, the leg proposition.
But I will need a second opinion when doing this as there is a high chance creating Frankenstein's monster.
4. How to Use Reference for Poses
Most useful reference photos are reference photos that the models are in their underwear as it is so versatile to so many different characters. You will have a better understanding of the pose without the extra bits and pieces.
On top of that, you can reuse the pose references as it doesn't have to fit with the models costume, if they were wearing one.
For the future I will be making my own portfolio of photo references, with that I'll require the models to wear black shorts and singlet for future references.
5. How to Use references for Costume Ideas, Details and Inspirations
6. Using reference for Colour and Lighting
7. Using references to Understand Anatomy, Form and Proportions
8. Stylizing and Exaggerating Reference
9. Changing the Camera Angle
10. Using Reference for an Inspiration Board
